Wake Up Call of the Day: According to Starbucks’...

thedailywhat:

Wake Up Call of the Day: According to Starbucks’ sustainability director Jim Hanna, the coffeehouse chain may soon be unable to sell its principal product due to the detrimental impact of climate change on coffee bean production.

“What we are really seeing as a company as we look 10, 20, 30 years down the road – if conditions continue as they are – is a potentially significant risk to our supply chain, which is the Arabica coffee bean,” Hanna told the Guardian in a phone interview.

Hanna is set to speak before members of Congress today on the issue of climate change and how it’s real and how someone should do something about it before we run out of coffee and chocolate and a whole bunch of other foodstuffs “many people can’t live without.”

Starbucks has already put Plan B in motion, announcing yesterday it plans to enter the juice-bar market — news that freaked out Jamba Juice stockholders, causing the price of JMBA to drop 3.5%.

Today’s congressional event is sponsored by the Union of Concerned Scientists, which recently reported that coffee brands have increased the cost of grinds by as much as 25% over the last year.

“The dwindling supply of coffee is but one example of the many impacts to come due to climate change,” the nonprofit writes, ” and should be a wake-up call for us all.”

[guardian / wapo / ucsusa / image: flickr.]

thedailywhat:

In Case You Missed It of the Day: Zach...

thedailywhat:

In Case You Missed It of the Day: Zach Galifianakis’s monologue on last night’s SNL was truly a thing to behold. Unfortunately, only an abbreviated version, which strips away the must-see climax, is currently available for viewing through the “official” channels (NBC, Hulu).

A full cut has been uploaded to YouTube (above), but it likely won’t stick around for long. Just in case, a clip of Zach as Little Orphan Annie is embedded below, and, should that video be disappeared as well, Mediaite has it too.

Lost And Found of the Day: A team of researchers...

thedailywhat:

Lost And Found of the Day: A team of researchers led by University of Hartford professor Richard Freund claim to have stumbled upon the Lost City of Atlantis in the Andalusian wetlands of Doñana, north of Cadiz, Spain. Freund and his team say that what sets their discovery apart from those previous Atlantis hunters is the multi-ringed layout of the site — a feature associated with the fabled naval power.

Freund says that the existence of nearby Atlantis-like “memorial cities” — which were supposedly constructed by Atlantis residents fleeing the tsunami which submerged their city — further cements his belief that Atlantis has finally been unearthed.

The team’s complete findings will be unveiled tonight, on the National Geographic Channel. Sure, Atlantis is just a myth invented by Plato to sell books, but it still makes for some damn fine television.

Nostalgia Overload of the Day: Remember that...

thedailywhat:

Nostalgia Overload of the Day: Remember that exciting bit of fakery about new episodes of classic NickToons that was making the rounds a few weeks back (see above)? Well, funnily enough, it may have played a decisive role in today’s announcement that TeenNick will soon begin rerunning many of your favorite Nick shows from years past.

Starting this fall, old episodes of Rugrats, Kenan & Kel, Pete & Pete, The Amanda Bynes Show, All That and Clarissa Explains It All will air during a special midnight-to-2 AM block called “The ’90s Are All That.” According to Inside TV, the network “came up with the idea after seeing the huge interest in early Nickelodeon programming on social media sites.”

“At the time, we were completely devoted to that audience ages 9, 10, and 11,” TeenNick GM Keith Dawkins told EW. ““It was ground-breaking and for the young viewers, a powerful and pivotal time in their lives. Those kids who are now 22, 23 and 24 want to bring that back.”
